    Piebald is a failure of the melanocytes to reach some areas of the skin.

    Genes like "s", "sl" and "ednrb" are responsible. The same thing is responsible for the white birthmarks on people's hair.

    Dilute causes the pigment to "curdle" so that its distribution within the hair is uneven; as a result, areas of the hair remain unpigmented and the coat appears fairer.
