Barbara McClintock proposed the basis of our current theory of horizontal gene transference. She claimed to feel that maize had movable genes. Her studies of chromosome formation and breakage were not understood, so at best they ignored her at worst they laughed. She had to learn of winning the 1983 Nobel prize over the radio (she had no telephone) more than thirty years after her first work.
