  1. Listen to music while you run, also take a couple Ibupropen a good half hour before th run. I get shin splints it seems like no matter what I do. So I pop a couple Ibupropen and crank up some music, I dont even notice anything till after the runs over.

  2. Of course when you're running, something will hurt; it's what makes you stronger. So if you're running with a friend on a more relaxed, conversational speed, then talk with them or play little games... you know, 21 questions or whatever.

If it's a harder run when you can't really talk, then listening to music really helps (like someone said) or just singing in your head. Or you can think about the distance not the pain... look at your finish line, then break it up into segments. Say to yourself, 'when i get to that tree, I'll change gears... make it hurt more'. Turn the pain into a positive thing... make it a habit to tell yourself good job and that you enjoy the pain.

  3. i hate that. like your gut hurts!! right??

ya well i have no idea how to fix it but i will be back to see how because i hate it so much.

  4. I try not to think about it too much, if you focus on the pain it becomes worse. I saw a shirt once that said "Pain is weakness leaving the body" and now that always inspires me. I try to imagine that with each stride I am becoming stronger, and that the strength overrules the pain. I also try to remember how good I'll feel once I've finished and know I didn't quit, because there is nothing like the feeling after a hard painful run.

  5. it happens to me too. but i just try to ignore it. winning is a big thing for me.

  6. meditation, meditation, meditation

what i used to to when i used to hit the wall was go back home and think of that pain, what i was doing at that time, and run through my mind how my my body changed once i had that pain. i would then meditate to block out that pain once i had got to the point where i had once endured the pain. hey presto i could run for longer as long as i went into a trance type of mind with my running.

never use this method if it is a injury you are trying to block out. you will only make that injury worst

  7. I guess it depends what's hurting and why.  If you're hurting because you have an injury then you're possibly focusing too hard on 'what might happen'.  If it's an injury pain, slow down and try to anaylse what's going on.

If you're in pain because you're working hard, then it has to be a 'mind over matter' moment.  Focus on something in the distance - a car, traffic lights anything and keep that focus till you get there.  That'll take your mind off the pain.

Im back training for my 2nd marathon this year, and I have niggles and pulls all the time - so Im learning how to block them out and focus on the end goal - the finish line, a glass of champagne and the ability to still get into my size 8 jeans!!

    Good luck ...
