  1. the bigger the tree the more leaves it produces, the more leaves the greater amount of O2 it can and will produce.

  2. I've been told youger growth gives off more oxygen

  3. there are too many things we don't know here.

    - what happens to trees that die in the old forrest?  if it's the okeefinokee swamp, they fall, get covered with water, and don't release their carbon back into the atmosphere.  that's the best option, by far.

    - clearly if we compare a specific old tree, to a group -- maybe an acre, of new trees, the single old tree is likely to incorporate more carbon.  if you look at tree rings on old trees, and consider that each ring runs throught the entire tree, it would take a very large number of young trees to make up the same volume.

the problem that exists is that, in a mature forest, you have trees dying and decaying.

HOWEVER, to balance that out, a "newly planted plantation" must have had something growing there before, which was cut down, and is decaying somewhere, releasing all the carbon that it had stored, and it will take many years for the newly planted trees to offset all the carbon that they release.  even if the old forest was used as lumber, there's quite a lot of slash that's left to rot, and it will still take the new forest a number of years just to offset that.

thus, i'd have to say that a newly planted plantation is a net loss of stored carbon, whereas an old forest is a wash - it stores as much as it releases.

whenever you do an analysis, setting up the parameters is very important.  in general, that's how one can get statistics to prove whatever point one would like to prove.  the math can be correct.  it's the rules that are the problem.

  4. Younger trees absorb more Co2 than older trees.

Is the tree is very  young (3 or less years aprox.) the very old tree would absorb  more co2

  5. We actually get more oxygen from the oceans plant growth.Reefs give off a lot of oxygen.
