  1. It's essentially the atmosphere filtering the light from the sun. More light of short wavelength (blue) gets throught than light of longer wavelengths (red), so the sky appears blue in color.


  2. Actually, it's not that more of the blue light gets through the atmosphere to your eyes.

    Our atmosphere absorbs more of the blue portion of the Sun's spectrum. So when you look at the sky, you see the blue light that is radiating throughout our sky. The other colors pass through our atmosphere more easily.

    The Martian atmosphere absorbs more of the red portion of the Sun's spectrum. That's why pictures we get back from the Mar's Landers show a red sky.
