The taste you find in most drinking water is from the trace minerals found in the liquid. Iron is a big element in most waters. Depending on where you get your water that iron content has a big range of taste. In areas where spring waters come from the rocky ground people drink it directly from that spring. But, in some areas where the ground is swampy and surface water is prevalent, the water can sometimes almost taste fishy, and boiling the water before drinking it is the norm.

In other applications, water a natural neutral solution, is enhanced and sometimes refined to meet requirements in different needs. When cooling, as in industrial needs it is used straight from it's source and then when it is returned it carries elements of it's use back to the environment. Waste water, heated after used in cooling can often grow large forms of bacteria and make people who drink it sick. In scientific and medicinal uses refining h2o to it's purest form helps calculate amounts of chemicals carried in the liquid for the specific use, such as dilution of acids in parts washing in factories. And the adding of sodium(salt) in hospital solutions that call for saline solutions.

It is no wonder with all that type of use people everywhere are starting to use bottled water and putting purifiers on their home water systems.

The second question is difficult to answer...it depends upon what you plan to use it for, or what you plan to mix with it and other things.
