What goes best with peppermint?

I am planning a wedding for this December and I want to make my own wedding cake. I've decided to make a double chocolate (groom's asking) but I want to shy away from the chocolate filling (half of my family gets heart burn from too much chocolate) with a peppermint icing. I haven't had the chance yet to try fondant or whipped cream based icing. But I am confused on what fillinf would go best with peppermint flavor. I don't want it to be an overwhelming peppermint taste just a hint of peppermint. Any ideas or suggestions?

  1. Whipped cream frosting won't work unless you can keep your cake in the refrigerator until you are ready to cut/serve it. Peppermint would go best with a traditional white frosting. If chocolate gives your family heartburn, peppermint is worse.

  2. Vanilla Pudding

    Whipped Cream Moose

    White Chocolate Pudding

  3. Probably a vanilla, custard, or cream cheese filling. If it's just a slight hint of peppermint, you should be fine with most dairy fillings. I'd stay away from fruit fillings, though.

  4. I think chocolate and peppermint are a wonderful idea for a December wedding!

Sounds like you could add a hint of peppermint flavor to any kind of filling... cream cheese frosting, a regular vanilla frosting, buttercream, whipped cream, etc.

  5. Orange and peppermint go great with chocolate.

  6. Peppermint might be too much of a flavor for your family too.  Chocolate goes well with all sorts of flavors.  Raspberry, strawberry, orange and even vanilla.

  7. Trust Martha Stewart!  :-)

  8. I'm not totally sure but chocolate and peppermint are delightful together. Could you make a variation of the peppermint as a filling too - but just a very light type, perhaps a vanilla base? I'm more of a cookie baker myself. ;-)

    Good luck - sounds delicious!

  9. My first thought was hot chocolate!  But I can see from reading the entire question you are trying to get away from chocolate.  Hmmm...maybe try a cream cheese based filling (kinda like cream cheese icing flavor)?  Peppermint is so strong of a taste I think you will just have to experiment with it.
