Question:

What goes in garbage disposal in sink and what goes in the bin?

I've moved to a high rise apartment block in the US. My sink has a garbage disposal thing that chops up whatever goes down there. I've never seen one of these things before (I'm English - don't think they're very common in the UK).

I assumed this was for anything that goes down the sink by chance.

However in a book I'm reading someone implied that no food should go out in garbage bags that go on the street, and that ALL food waste should go in garbage disposal in the sink.

Is this right?!

  1. You have to be careful. Some food items will clog it and cause it to break. Avoid egg shells, bones, too many potato peelings, apple cores, things that are too hard. It can handle most every other food item. Don't overload it all at once. Let a few things go down with the water running, then add some more. The key is to keep the water running and to keep the disposal clean. My favorite thing to do is to put lemon wedges or grapefruit wedges in there. Man, does that make it smell wonderful. You can pour bleach in it once in a while, or simply squirt the dish soap in there and let it run. Be careful! Don't stick your fingers in there at all. If you have to retrieve anything that falls in, please make sure that it's not on. The disposal is a wonderful invention. Makes this mom's job easier! Good luck!

  2. you can put whatever trash you want to get rid of (food or no food) out in the outside bin. And inside, if you have some food to dump from dinner and dont feel like puting it in you rgarbage then you can put it in the disposal. but you dont HAVE to do it. the trash man will pick up whater you have in a bag in the outside trash...unless is some kind of really big item like and old sofa or something.

  3. You can put most food scraps in the disposer.  Generally not meat or bones.  Any other food item should be ok.  Be sure to run it with the water on.  I put egg shells in mine to help clean the gross stuff in there, and orange or lemon peels help keep it fresh smelling.  If you put anything down it that is really greasy, be sure to have hot water running, so it doesn't clogit up with congeled grease.  I usually put dish soap un mine after I use it to help keep it clean.

  4. The thing to remember is that the trash disposal chops things up and it flushes down the drain. So if you wouldn't put it in the drain, I wouldn't put it in the disposal.

They can be a nightmare if the food doesn't get chopped up enough. You can start plugging drains and such.

  5. The G/D is made for most soft food, go to the web site for ISE g/d they are the number one in g/d, and  they should give you many tips on how to use it right. The reason the blgd does not want food thrown away is to cut down on rodents!
