What goes on in an Embassy?

Ok, I know that it's US soil and they help you with papers and such, but are all of them highly guarded? Do they only let people in with a US passport unless otherwise notified? Can you stay there? Also, if you have a problem where the other country's law enforcement is after you and you are safe in the embassy, how would they get you home w/o them taking you back on that countrys soil?

  1. Whew, a lot of questions. But let's see what we can do with 'em.

Guarded?  You betcha!  Ain't no such thing as a "soft" embassy. Some are very hardened, some are impossible to crash.

You can't sleep in an embassy. Some embassies have large compounds where the Marine Detachment may have billets, but they don't run a hostel.

Now for the real question- how can an embassy get you out of the country if you mess up big time.  The embassy will intercede on your behalf with law enforcement, but they won't give you a James Bond-type escape. Your question implies an intent to evade the host country's law enforcement which is not so. You can't commit a local crime, run to the embassy and then get Star Trek "transported" to the USA.

With that, if you *do* get in legal/criminal trouble, there are good folks who'll do what they can for you- they'll visit you, they'll contact your family, they'll give you a list of criminal attorneys, yadda yadda.

Best bet- don't go to another country and mess up. Keep your nose clean, hey?

  2. 1) They are not all US soil.

    2) There is very little Classified going on in Embassies

    3) A US passport is not a ticket in.  You have to have official business at the Embassy to get it.

    4) Embassies are not hotels

    5) You get arrested by locals, the Embassy can SOMETIMES help arrange your release and deportation.  The Embassy is not an asylum cause your a r****d who went overseas and acted a fool in someone else's country.

Take 1/2 of what you know about Embassies and throw it away, it's not right.

  3. An embassy is a safe place with persons that have legitimate purposes are entertained for their questions and need about the host country.

  4. Embassies relay new information, laws and all that to their home country..

They also relay policies and info from their home country to their host country

  5. Normally they are just offices. If you are just John Q Public they will let you hang, just like at home.

If you are rich and son of rich they will stuff you into a diplomatic sack and put you on the next flight out.

Yup, being a senator's son has perks.

Embassies are the offices of foreign power executives (ambassadors) charged with representing their country to the host country.

They are not there to save your scrawny insignificant butt if you get busted for rape or dope dealing.
