I reported a car stolen from my property to the police. When i picked up the incident rpt it did not have a vid number on it. How important is this to be on there. The police who took my information down was not there, but I will contact him today.

  1. They will look for the vehicle similar to the description you gave. Vin Numbers are changeable , just like license plates. That's where the Police work comes in.

  2. Just because it's not on the report doesn't mean that the police don't have it.  To have a vehicle entered into NCIC as stolen, the reporting agency must have a VIN.

I'm assuming that at least the officer wrote down the license plate?  With the license plate, the officer can obtain the VIN (unless you illegally switched plates).

  3. When the officer neters the car as stolen into LEADS he probaly entered the VIN as well. If not the license plate will indicate the VIN when the officer looks at the hard coopy. I don't know why it wasn't on the report.

  4. that VIN has to be on there.how else could the car be identified?

  5. It doesn't matter if the VIN number was on the report or not.  When the vehicles info was entered into the state computer system as stolen it incuded the VIN number.
