  1. tell us what you like and don't like.

The question is just too broad.... there are so many things to visit... You could spend a full year overthere and still miss stuff...

  2. all the famous places

  3. The best way to be prepared for a trip to Paris is to pick up the latest Michelin Guide available in most bookstores.  Updated often it's THE travel guide with recommended walks and other information.  Don't be afraid to use the Metro.  It's a great way to get around and every time you emerge up into a new neighborhood there are wonderful things to see.  Above all be prepared to walk, because it's the best way to see Paris.

  4. Central Paris, is divided neatly into two by the River Seine, with 20 districts called arrondissements spiralling clockwise from the centre. The area north of the river, the Rive Droite (Right Bank), includes the tree-lined Avenue des Champs-lyses, running west to the Arc de Triomphe. East of the avenue is the massive Muse du Louvre, the Centre Georges Pompidou and a lively district of museums, shops, markets and restaurants. Immediately south of the Centre Georges Pompidou on the le de la Cit is the world-famous Notre Dame. The area south of the river, the Rive Gauche (Left Bank), is home to the city's most prominent landmark, the Eiffel Tower.

Paris is full of famous art galleries. The Muse du Louvre is Paris' single largest building, Europe's largest palace and the largest museum in the western hemisphere. You may also like to look at other galleries in Paris like the Musee d'Orsay where you can see paintings from the Impressionist period on including Van Gogh, Monet, Cezanne and Gaugin.

If you feel like a bite to eat in Paris try the Chez Benoit. First opened in 1912, Benoit is one of the last true Parisian bistros. Chez Benoit is located just near Hotel de Ville & the Pompidou Centre.

Another must-see in Paris is the Moulin Rouge, well known for it's risqu entertainment.

    Have a great time.

  5. Do some reading beforehand and decide which churches and museums you want to visit.  Add in the Eifel tower and the Arc de Triomphe.  Also Montmarte and Sacre Couer.  Oh you must see the Opera Garnier.  And the musee Rodin.  And Georges Pompidou.  Notre DAme. Sainte Chappelle. Invalides.   You can buy a museum pass which will get you into a lot of the sights.

There is so much to see and do that you should come with a fairly good idea on what you would like to do. You can't see everything, so plan on returning again someday.  Oh and learn as many polite French phrases as you can.

  6. Paris is a big city, an old city, and a city filled with political, cultural, artistic and literary hisatory. There are enough "good places" to see that you could stay there for years and not see them all. (I've been visiting Paris pretty regularly for the last 35 years and I haven't seen everything yet.)

So your question is hard to answer because to completely answer it we'd have to write a book.

Luckily, a lot of people have done exactly that and any one of these guide books is pretty much as good as another.

I know this sounds silly but being a "good" tourist is hard work and you should spend almost as much time preparing as you do actually being there.

So get at least one of those books and read it.

And while you're at it, read some of the books written by people about their experiences in Paris. there are a lot of these type of books too. Hemingway's "A Moveable Feast" is a great one but even a funny book like Art Buchwald's "I'll always have Paris" is worth reading.

Make a list of what you want to see based on your personal interests and the amount of time you have. Of course, its fine to come back to this forum with more specific questions after you have had the time to do some research of your own.

There's also a lot to Paris that is beyond the tourist sights. Its the ambience and the attitude of Paris which need to be lived and felt.

You should spend some time just strolling around the city to appreciate its architecture and to get a feel for its medieval layout, the Belle Epoch improvements of Baron Hausman, and the modernizations seen in places like the Les Halles Forum and the new Opera in the Place Bastille.

You should take a little time to just sit in a cafe in the Latin Quarter or St. Germaine and people watch.

Enjoy some of the nightlife of Paris. Not the tourist ripoffs like the Moulin Rogue or the Lido but the vast number of fantastic music venues, from the jazz joints to discos.

Eat! And be a bit courageous. Go to places that don't cater to tourists and don't have English menus. Just point to things on the menu or, better still, walk into a cafe at lunchtime and ask for the daily special which you'll almost always see displayed on a chalk board. don't worry if you don't know what it is! Try it! The worst that will happen is that you'll have a hilarious story to tell about how you got served a calve's head with cream sauce or something else too weird for you to eat.

Mainly, don't listen to the half wits who tell you Parisians are terrible people or adivse staying in a tight little tourist cocoon..

Strike up conversations with strangers, be open minded, put your map in your back pocket and just wander around, get lost, experiment, learn, take the time to really look at things.

    Mainly, enjoy yourself.

  7. There are so many fantastic places to visit in Paris, you really can't go wrong. I would start with the famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, L'arc de Triomphe, Le Louvre, Sacre Coeur, Notre Dame,  Place de la Concorde, Madeleine, the tuileries garden, the Centre Pompidou. The Catacombes is burial place that has subterranean tunnels -not every visits this landmark and it is very cool. For shopping you must hit the Champs Elysees, Place Vendome (jewelry), Rue du Fauborg-St-Honore for clothing. Another interesting landmark is Pere Lachaise cemetary (20th arr) famous for its interrment of Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf, Sarah Bernhardt and many others. A real touristy place is the Moulin Rouge which is a vegas type cabaret. Expect to spend money here on the cabaret experience. For a delightful hot chocolat head to the famous cafe Les Deux Magots.  For pure pleasure take a bateaux mouche ride at night that will allow you a view from of Paris from the Seine that is  spectacular. If you are truly adventurous and wish for an excursion outside of  Paris - head to Versailles. Versailles is truly spectacular and will never be forgotten with its exquisite gardens and its hall of mirrors.
