I'm in 9th grade and I was wondering if they gave me an 8th grade math class because I'm really bad in math! So is Algebra 9th grade math?

  1. yes it is a ninth grade class, i took it last year, the only reason for the "A" part is that algebra 1a is the first half, as in you have to take algebra 1a, before you can take algebra 1b, its just a way of separating the two halves between semesters, and giving them an order, and different names

  2. Algebra 1 was traditionally a 9th grade class in most American schools and Pre Algebra was often offered in 8th grade.  Some schools accelerate  that and offer a Pre Algebra type class in 7th grade and put 8th graders in Algebra 1.    You would have to speak to your counselors to know.   Many international schools push students to Algebra at the 6th and 7th grade level and offer Calculus and higher to 10th, 11th and 12th graders.     Traditionally, Algebra is 9th grade level math in the US.

  3. Algebra 1 is traditionally a ninth grade class.  It's only in the last few years that 8th graders take algebra at all; it used to be "arithmetic" and then they made it pre-algebra, and now sometimes it's algebra but sometimes it's not.  Algebra 1A would be like the first half of the total Algebra I.  They probably scheduled it that way because -- as you say -- you're really bad in math!  1A should go slower than regular Algebra 1.
