What grade or age was your child in when let them walk to school ?

I was in 5th grade but my school was just across the street from our house.  After that I could walk anywhere.

9 but she walks with a group pf friends that live on the street

my children all walked from grade one, but always in a group

that contained older children.

each household along the way kept an eye out and when the

group came by their child came out and joined them.  after

school the same group walked home together with children

peeling off as their home was reached.

with each looking out for all we never had an incident.

With my step daughters - it was 6th grade (well for eldest as she was 11yrs) but if one was sick I would take the other unless they had a friend to walk with.

Now my eldest step daughter is 15 and only has to walk across the road to school (literally) and my other step daughter is 12 and occassionally walks or rides to school on her own, but usually comes with me when I take my 5yr old to preprimary.

when i was in 4-5 grade my parents let me bike to school instead of the usual car ride.

It depends on how far the school is.

My school was about 3 blocks away in a super residential place so I started to walk by myself around the 2nd or 3rd grade.

i still drive my son to school and he is 15 i think it's ok when there about 11/12 to walk to school on there own unless you live round the corner i have to drive as my son is disabled.i do think bullying can start when children walk to and from school and who is there to look out for them.

my mom let me walk to school when i was 8, but it really depends which niegborhood ur in:

Rural w/out sidewalks-10

Rural w/ sidewalks-6

Small Suburban-  7

City- 10

I lived about 2.5 blocks from my elementary school and my parents let me walk to school in a group beginning in kindergarten. At the time, it was my other kindergarten friend and our fifth grade neighbor walking together.

Mind you, our city's elementary schools are located within the neighborhoods, so it is a pretty safe area.

5th grade...not before then since he has to cross the main highway. He will be walking a lot this yr (7th grade) due to morning football practices and he has to be there at 7 am.  Bus doesn't come until 7:30 am
