  1. 1.  I recycle cans, plastic, glass, paper and anything else that can be reused, passed to someone else that can re-use it or used in a way that gives it another useful life before heading to the landfill.

    2.  I plan my car trips to complete errands using the least amount of gas.

    3.  I exchange unwanted items with friends and family for wanted items.

    4.  I belong to a local group that Freecycles.

    5.  I compost my peelings, fruit skins, egg shells, coffee, tea and shred paper to compost for my garden plants.

    6.  I grow my own organic tomatoes, basil, and peppers.

    7.  I try and buy from local merchants for produce, saving gas, transportation costs and enriching my own local citizens first.

    8.  I buy from our very own local Farmers Market.

    9.  I share with family, friends, and neighbors any extra I have of something so that resources can be conserved and used effectively.

    10. I give castoff clothing and items to local charities, preferring our local Clothes Closet, where it is ALL FREE to those needing it.

    11. I shop at local 2nd hand stores with my foster children, teaching them thrift, responsible citizenship, being future caretakers of our planet and show them by doing, that sometimes clothing, like jeans, can have another life with someone else before it hits the landfill.

    12. We go to the library 2 times a week for free reading material and videos, saving gas, saving trees for printing magazines I would have bought and tossed, and using the libraries computers for children's homework (saving my $$$ on my own computer from picking up viruses from places like Myspace, AOL and all those free download sites that kids like to visit).

    13. I buy green whenever and where ever I can.

    14. I buy things made from recycled materials.

    15. I plant trees, shrubs, and plants that clean the air and provide habitat, AND protect my home from wind and weather, thereby keeping my heating/cooling costs lowered.

    16. I am "greening" my home as I remodel, adding insulation, sealing holes, cracks and windows and doors with caulk and cement, making the house more weather tight.

    17. I use lower wattage bulbs in rooms for general lighting and energy saving ones for more task orientated activities.

    18. I am a Master Gardener and work on local projects to enhance the ecosystems of low income housing, local beautification programs, programs for children to learn about plants, trees and growing things that give back to the environment, zero scape (landscaping that takes into account a low water consumption or no water needed planting) and planting native plants.

    19. Using renewable sources of wood, certified green products, and land practices that enhance our resources, not exhaust them.

    20. I share and swap plants with other Master Gardeners in my area, to share the wealth of plants I have and to acquire new ones.

    21. Opening the shades on sunny days in the winter to let the solar sun heat up rooms during winter months and using shades in the summer to keep rooms cooler in the summer.

    22. I do not use products that can transfer into the creek that runs through my backyard, thereby affecting the frogs, ducks and other wildlife that depends on it for food, shelter and water that would adversely affect it.

    23. Sharing information and getting more information about other activities I can do or encourage others to do to help make being green pleasant, doable and economically feasible for others, including myself and my household.

  10. Since you asked I will share my best recycling idea with you.

    My Best Recycling Idea

Besides recycling the plastic containers, you can improve your work or home environments by bringing live potted plants indoors.

    Major items needed:

One empty plastic gallon container.   Tree Top Apple Juice is preferred, or equal in shape.

One empty plastic ½ gallon container.  Langers All Pomergranate Juice is preferred or equal.

Directions:  Lay the plastic gallon container on its side so the front label is facing up.  Place the empty plastic half gallon container on the label and with a sharpie pen outline the bottom on the Tree Top label and with a sharp knife carefully cut the outline.  Insert the half gallon into the hole until it rest on the back label of the gallon container.  Then mark and cut approximately one inch above the cut on the ½ gallon  to complete your planter container.  Remove and drill several ¼ inch holes on the bottom of the ½ gallon cut container for drainage.

Fill the cut ½ gallon planter with one inch of gravel before putting in good potting mix soil and live growing plant.  If you make two or more you can pour the water back and forth and not waste the water with the nutrients.

Go to NASA’s Clean Air Plant Study for the top ten plants that cleans the indoor air better than the rest.   http://www.zone10.com/tech/NASA/Fyh.htm
