What guage of guitar string should a beginner get for electric guitar?

  1. Normal sized, nickel coated strings.


  2. I've been playing for 19yrs and have always used .009 to .042 gage strings.  I tried many different brands when I started out but finally landed with D'addario.  I haven't looked back.  

    BTW - GHS Boomers are horrible.

  3. Ernie Ball Regular Slinky's (light green package) or equivalent.

    Not 100% sure on their gage, but I think that they are

    10-13-17-26-36-46

    Anyways, that is the gage that you want to start out on.

    Once you start bending you might want lighter gage. or if you start to down tune, you may want larger. For now, those will be perfect for learning.
