Ive been playing the same crappy guitar for a few years now. Its a Peaver Raptor plus EXE (came with the starter pack). I scrapped the amp and bought a Roland Micro-cube, and i find its too small to get a decent sound out of it. I've been playing loads of Disturbed, just hard rock, heavy metal in general (Alot of drop C tuned songs). What I was wondering is what's the next step up? I want a decent guitar and an amp, but being 14, i cant afford either. I'm looking for something not too expensive but still decent. What do you suggest, and how much would it cost me?

  1. I would start by upgrading your amp, because especially with heavier music a better amp always makes more of a difference.

In your situation, what with the detuned rock and all that, an important consideration will be speaker size. Smaller speakers can't produce lower tones as well as larger ones will - it's simple physics. Larger speakers mean more bass and more volume - and, incidentally, better imaging and resolution as far as tone goes too.

I don't know what your price range is, but you can start by looking through musiciansfriend.com and seeing what the general price range is out there. I am sure I've seen at least one amp under 200$ with a 12" speaker.

On the other hand, sometimes it just isn't mean to be. Try looking at Kustom amps, they sound very good for their price range. Of course you can't miss with Marshall, but you also can expect to spend around 250$ for their 30-watt model.

As far as the guitar goes, in all seriousness the type of guitar and quality of guitar becomes less important, the more gain you add (gain = decreased bandwidth = less obvious variations in tone). As long as you have high output humbuckers and a decent quality amp, you can pretty much get away with murder. I quote Kurt Cobain as a great example thereof.

So you might want to think about upgrading your pickups... Guitar Center has DiMarzio Evos for pretty cheap, it's not a bad deal. If you can find Rockfields or Dragonfires, those are two other ways to go as well, as far as being on the less expensive side of things.

  2. Can't go wrong with a Fender Amp.

I've had a Stratocaster, Squire, for over two years now. Still a great Guitar. For beginners and experts.

  3. defenitely a fender or crate amp

  4. fender suks gibson is the way to go or epiphone its the same just a lil bit cheaper and get a marshal or go with the starter packs they come with an amp already

  5. Hrm... Depends on your budget. Gibson is great for hard rock, but if you can't spend that much, go for Epiphone. A small modeling amp might do nicely... I'm personally partial to Peavy and Crate amps.

If you want an inexpensive "heavy metal" guitar, you could also go with B.C. Rich. *shrug*

  6. Dean Guitar because their cool and Michael Batio plays them (check him out) and  Create amp
