I asked this question a few hours ago but it never showed up...and then it got reported and deleted.

Anyways...what had the most affect on you choosing a team to root for? Family? Location? Media? Something else?

  1. Well, almost entirely based on location.  I'm a fan of all Wisconsin teams, so that helps.

I REALLY became a Brewers fan back when the All-Star game was in Milwaukee.

  2. My mom (while living in New Jersey) was a Brooklyn Dodger fan thus a Yankee hater. Dad liked Willie Mays, so I came to the conclusion that rather than pick one of their teams over the other I would choose neither; and became a Red Sox fan. My having family in Vermont helped too, but it wasn't the determining factor.

(Since you asked this question in the baseball section Greta it is my assumption you wanted to know for my favourite baseball team. Did you want to know for my favourite basketball, NFL and hockey teams?)

  3. Well I live near both the Angels and the Dodgers so I can watch either one but the thing that made me like the Angels way more were the players.  For some reason none of the Dodgers players really clicked with me but on the Angels I started to love players like Garret Anderson, Tim Salmon, Troy Glaus, etc.  Also Soscia is awesome haha

  4. I like CATS. And they are from my Native City. We didn't have an MLB team in Anchorage. Family:  my mother was very unhappy I became a baseball fan so I had to root for a team out of rebellion.

  5. Well when I started rooting for the Cubs I was about 6 or 7 years old so favorite color had a lot to do with it.

  6. Location, Family, And the underdog feeling. My team is the Pirates, I grew up in Pennsylvania, my dad is die-hard about any team from Pittsburgh, and I see the Sox and the Yankees are (usually) always successful so it helps that my team is always picked last :(

  7. For me, it was a mix of my location and family influence.

For example, my father is a big FC Barcelona fan, so I grew up as an FCB fan.

My other team, the Los Angeles Galaxy, I root for because I was born and raised in Los Angeles.

To be honest, I don't understand people who choose teams they have no connection to. For example, a person in Los Angeles who has no connection to New York, rooting for the Yankees instead of the Dodgers or Angels. But to each their own...

EDIT: I didn't realize that the question was posted in the Baseball section, my answer's still relevant though, so I'll leave it.

  8. I really believe that you don't "pick" your favorite team. I don't think it's a deliberate thing. It's more like your favorite color. Everybody has one, but there is no reason WHY one color is someone's favorite. And try changing favorite colors. You just can't do it. I have a Pittsburgh Pirate fan friend. He has renounced them 10 times in the last 20 years. Still emails me about them. You just can't shake it.

  9. The Family, the father influence the most to choose a team

  10. Location and Family

My dad used to always go to Giants games becuase we used to live Close to San Francisco

and My whole family loved the GIants

    Same with the 49ers

My dad bought season tickets in '82 when they were 2-12

    and I was worth it

Beucase my dad saw the Glory years of the '9ers

    including witnessing "The Catch"

  11. I am a huge sports fan, and it's unfortunate this particular question is coming from a Bostonian...

Either way, I've grown up in New York and the Yankees/Jets/Nets were always on TV.

I never understood how anyone could like a team they saw, at most, once or twice a year...

Media/Location, IMHO, go hand-in-hand, so that's my answer...

BTW, one day you will see the light and will convert to a fan of REAL teams :P

  12. Being born here in Texas. :]

  13. location.

  14. location... i live in windsor right across the border from detroit so i've always liked all the detroit teams, even the lions lol

  15. family :)

my family just loved the angels over the dodgers ever since they immigrated here from Korea :)

so it was always angels and not dodgers..

but we don't hate the dodgers >.<

  16. I was a Yankee fan for a couple of years.  Then in 1964, when they fired Yogi Berra in favor of Johnny Keane simply because Keane's Cardinals beat them in the world Series, I just went anti=Yankee.  School trip a year later took me to the Stadium in the Bronx for a game against Boston, so I rooted for them.  Ever since.  I guess the fact that there is so much energy in that rivalry made it stick.  A more neutral team like the Twins, let's say, would not have lasted as long.

It was definitely not a family thing.  My father was a big time Yankee fan who would always sit in first base bax seats unless Boston came to town.  Then he would sit in left field for the sole purpose of booing  Ted Williams.  Until the day he died he called me a lousy traitor.

  17. Location. I'm from Brooklyn originally and I was only going to root for New York teams. I saw the Yankees first and Dave Winfield became my favorite player.

And in case anyone tells you, no, Brooklyn folks aren't supposed to be Mets fans. Half the borough are Yankees fans. And I'm proud to be among them. Yanks for life!

  18. My Great Grandmother (has always lived in So.Dak.) got me into the Twins when I was wee-little. I lived in Texas the first 16 years of my life but we use to come up here to visit quite a few times a year and back in my younger years I remember watching them play and listening to the games on the radio. I live in South Dakota now but I'm only a little less than 4 hours away from the Metrodome. So, I would say more-so family, but the location helps a lot.

  19. Well i live in Hawaii ,but my bf got me into the Angels , Lakers and the Chargers.

We go to Cali to see them play many times a year!

  20. It was the TV lol to be honest and  being a teenager to but it has worked out great

P.S  Thanks Greta for not asking a Yankees question

  21. location, location, location.

  22. my family

    where i live

Nebraska Cornhuskers are loved by everyone in nebraska and for good reason

  23. I watched baseball as a kid and one day I decided to pick a World Series winner (in July).  The team went on to win it all and so I stuck with them.

  24. Where I live. I love the Cleveland Indians because I live in Cleveland and because they're the only team I know all the players on!!

  25. Well, for one thing I live 10 blocks from Miller (County Stadium at the time).

For my first few years on earth, I didn't like baseball all too much.

But many factors turned me into a diehard Brewer fan, or Baseball fan, for that matter.

I was 6 when my older brother moved out. He played PS1's Triple Play Baseball '98 all the time. He didn't take it with him. I saw it, watched it, and started playing it. (At that time, I was told that lefties were a lot less common than they really are) I noticed that the two best players on the Brewers at that time, Jeromy Burnitz and Geoff Jenkins(LOL), were both lefties, so that got my interest. My grandpa used to drive me down to the Stadium site to watch Miller Park get constucted. Of course, those were dark days for the Brewers(assuming most of you followed baseball in the early 2000's), with worries of the team moving, losing best players, new owner... But that only made me more interested. I never looked back.

So....Yeah. A Video Game first gave me interest. But Location made me choose.

What's the Moral of the story? Video Games ultimately make your life a lot more interesting. That's it.

  26. A mix of family and location. I like the Giants, but my grandma is a die hard Giants fan and I tend to root against her teams to irritate her a little bit. When I first started liking the A's it was because I could root against the Giants and still root for a team in my area. I know that sounds like a dumb reason, but there's nothing more fun than when my grandma and I root for different teams because we always gloat when our team does well. Anyways, I just started following the A's more and more and now I am a huge fan. It went from having fun to really loving a team.

  27. Family and Location. I was born here in Massachusetts and growing up my dad was a Red Sox fan, so I just kind of went with him. I've been a sox fan ever since.

  28. TV gave me my first favourite team: my family got cablevision in 1973 or so (I was six) and I always watched the NBC Game of the Week with Tony Kubek and Joe Garagiola (I think they were the announcers). Things being what they were at that time, I was fed a pretty steady diet of Big Red Machine and they were the first team I called a favourite.

But, in 1977 the Mariners came to Seattle and I could finally listen to baseball games every night on the radio (I lived near Vancouver, Canada). I became a fan of the M's then and still love them and Dave Niehaus to this day.

    Great question.

  29. Nothing because I don't watch sports.

  30. my dad is a die hard cardinal fan and i also live about 1 hour and a half from st.louis

  31. my boyfriend. i never watched baseball until he wanted me to watch a game with him. we watched it & now i love baseball. so since he likes the red sox & he is the one that showed me the game i am a red sox fan now. whooo.......
