Hi, I do as little around the apartment as I can get away with, but every now and then I need a hammer. I'm about to purchase my first and perhaps only hammer. What brand should I buy and how much money will I spend? Thanks.

  2. My first hammer was just like the one in the picture.  It was perfect for the little jobs - hanging pictures or putting together furniture.

I still have it and still use it - 11 years later.

  3. Sure, you could get away with a cheapie, but for $30 you can buy an Estwing that will last your entire lifetime.  The hammer head and shaft are one piece of steel, and the handle is stacked leather.  These classics are affordable heirlooms, if you somewhat into tools.

  4. buy a Stanley.  I prefer a nice wood handled hammer, but maybe a carbon fiber one would be good for you.  talk to the guy at Sears (or other local hardware store).  you probably just want a simple claw hammer (the claw is for removing nails)  and you won't need a very heavy one.  they will help you choose the right one.  you shouldn't probably have to spend more than $20-30.

  5. Brand is no matter. But make sure it is 16oz. If you're in Canada, Canadian Tire usually have MasterCraft ones  on sale for 4-5 bucks. Or Princess Auto is also an excellent and cheap  place to shop for tools. Good luck.
