One of my friend likes to wax his good but never scrape off any, he ride with about 1.5mm of wax on his board, he saids it rides fast like a soap in the bathroom and prevent damage, so why do people not ride with too much wax on their board? doesn't wax make you go fast so shouldn't you apply a good amount?

  1. strangely enough, too much wax can creat friction between your board and the snow, especially without scraping it, which will slow you down.  What scraping does for it is it makes the wax a uniform depth and also "glasses" the wax making smoother and faster ride.  It takes off the uneven parts of the wax that slows you down and creates friction, the best thing to do that I have found in my 20 years of snowboarding, owning my own company, testing different waxes and things of that nature is to actually, create a thin wax base with a hot wax base, do that a 3-4 times per season...the wax will absorb into your base giving it an almost permanent wax base to where you will only have to wax your board once per year.  Also I use only a grind rite to do the base every year, it is definately worth taking it to someone that has one cause you will get a really good ride and all the dings in your ptex will get smoothed out.  As far as a thicker coat giving more protection against damage...well, that doesnt make a difference if you are hitting rocks, tree parts, things of that nature because it will just cut right through the wax.

  2. yeah well it makes you go fast, but too much can get in the way of your snowboarding. and if you have too much, it's likely to scrape off on objects as you ride.

  3. No way. Too much wax makes you slow. Spread it out with an iron, and scrape it off after it cools, then buff it out with a red scour pad from end to end. Hot Rod!

  4. If you use too much wax it will start to form a bumpy mess on the bottom of the board that will slow you down.  When you scrape off as much as you can you are making the best use of the material that the manufacturer put on the base of the board.  If your friend was right, then all the racers would load up their bases with wax... they don't!
