What happen when they recall a vehicle?

I was reading today Gm had to recall 857,735 vehicles. Due to a short circuit in the system, they are planning to install a wire harness with an in-line fuse free of charge. What if they recall a car and it can't be fixed. Does everybody get the money for what they still owe on the car? Do they return it directly to the manufacturer? How would does that work? How would they do that?

  1. You just take it to any GM dealer in your hometown after you have called them to check your VIN first and they will set up a time that will work with you and repair for free.

Update....They will fix it no matter what it takes and if they cant then you wont even get blue book for it.......and you would be responsible for the remaining balance due or they will try and put you into another car or truck and start the payment process all over again and add what was owed from the first car to the next car…….

  2. RECALL assumes the car will be repaired.  Replacement or buy back is the next step, when a product has such a fatal flaw that it can not be repaired, or it is not worth it to repair.  I can't think of an automotive example of this, but there have been many times when toys given away at fast food places were pronounced unsafe for kids, with no hope of fixing the problem.  The solution, general recall and your toy was replaced with another toy.  Same principle with cars, if one was so bad that it could not be fixed, they would have to replace it or buy it back.

  3. A recall is to fix a specific problem and repair kits/actions are specified for it in a work order from the mfr. I think that if there is another defect affecting the system, it would cost extra to have that unrelated problem fixed, even if it has to be fixed to check the problem that caused the recall. Check with a dealer to be sure. If the problem cannot be resolved through the recall action or extraneous repair, then the system might be disabled if it did not affect the operation of the vehicle. Again, check with a dealer for specifics.
