Hello.  Your dog should not eat for at least 8 hrs before the surgery otherwise she could have nausea because of the anesthesia injected.  Vets advise to stop all food starting at midnight the night before your dog's surgery.  It's like in humans before we undergo operation/surgery, we are advised not to eat before midnight. if you want to know more about spay your dog, just check this site:

Your dog can vomit and aspirate the vomit into her lungs!  If your dog has eaten before the operation you need to inform your vet before she has the spay.  They may want to reschedule the surgery.

If she ate within 12 hours of the surgery, it needs to be put off.  There's a danger that dogs will throw up under anesthesia, and aspirate (breathe in) the vomitus, which could result in choking, or pneumonia. Call the vet and explain; they will value your honesty!
