  1. From a Rugby perspective, the Normans conquered the Saxons of England and introduced a game this is truly the forbearer of modern day Rugby.

Norman knights would get a pigs bladder (later leather) and stuff it full of straw and rocks and go and play a brutal free for all (and usually free of any rules) that was used as a part of fitness and one-on-one combat training.

The same premise applies as modern rugby, two teams, set numbers and a goal to get the ball across.  Only this game guaranteed injury and brutality of conquest!!!!!  Not sure if many modern players would make it half way!!

  4. 1066 AD saw the pre runner of the soon to be 5 Nations tournament. The innaugural match was between France and England.

France brought a strong team over with a monster pack and they ended up doing ok.

The injury list was so heavy though that they thought they should lea it for 850 years or so before having a re-match, sort out a decent playing area, and limit the number of players.

It wasn't a bad match, but it was only shown on Sky, and not many people had sky in those days, Well they had Sky, but no TV :-)
