I was playing footy man and happend to come accross him as a free agent and just looked at his past clubs I rememeber him at borough but I saw in his history he had a 30 million move to lazio (I was too young to know anything about football then). He played one season at lazio then went on loan at loads of diff clubs then moved to borough. My question is what happend to him after he made is 30 mill switch at lazio as he only played 1 season there before going on loan to diff clubs for next few years. Was he a massive flop in italy or something then? Thanks

  1. I loved watching Mendieta play at Valencia - simply wonderful player.

I think its a little unfair to say one of the most expensive flops in history - given it was an era when transfer sums were totally out of control, and nobody could justify the amounts of money being thrown around.

But certainly, he didnt match the hype his move generated unfortunately. He didn't play a huge amount of matches, and probably wasnt given enough time to settle.

It did seem to be the start of his decline as he never really had the same impact at Barca or at Middlesborough.

Even at Middlesborough there were many times when his class shone through and you could see glimpses of the quality he had - but the consistency was never there after those few fabulous seasons at Valencia.

Still, in my opinion, he was an outstanding player who i will always remember fondly.

And STILL, the best penalty taker you will EVER see!!

p.s. Also check out his goal in the Copa Del Rey - its out of this world!

  2. Yes, he was a massive flop... Not the only one, but sure on the chart of the most expensive flops ever.
