Question:

What happened!? Yogies all over my hamster?

I got my Syrian hamster these yogurt treats called Yogies today and I put about a couple in her food bowl for a snack and she stuffed them all in her cheeks. I checked on her an hour later and she was just sitting there, motionless with what looked like blood all over her mouth, face, and belly. So I started freaking out and took out of her cage to see what happened and I knew then that it couldn't be blood because it was pinkish and thick like the colors of the Yogies treats. So I got a wet cloth and started to wipe the Goo away and it helped but there is still some stuck in her fur but at least now she's moving. Why did this happen? Should I complain to the company who makes the treats?

  1. she might of left the in her mouth too long or fell asleep with them in her mouth. i don't think its serious but, if your worried call a vet (so they cant bill you!) and ask. or you can call the manufacturer and ask them. i dont think they can hurt your hammie. i got simalar things for my syrian hamster fluffy and the melted all over his fur. i thought something was wrong because he had blue gunk all over him. turns out he brought all of them up to his hideout (a built in hamster wheel) and they melted. hehehe. i couldnt get the gunk off my brand new white d&g purse. so sad. hope i helped!!!!

  2. i wouldent give them to her again it sound like she was sick the rest she will groom out try a sand bath they may work

  3. that happened to my hamster, i gave her yogies and held her after she stuck them in her pouch.  i wouldnt stop giving them to her though, she loves them

  4. she probably just kept them in here check's so long that they started melting and dripping out of her mouth...don't worry.

maybe she meant to hide them, but fell asleep or something and when she woke up, they were still in her mouth and dripping all over her...

  5. don't worry they just melted in her mouth lol it sounds funny but she'll clean herself and get the rest of the goo out

  6. There is no use complaining to the product manufacturer. They will continue marketing such unhealthy products for hamsters and other animals as long as there are gullible customers ready to buy them.

Most of these commerical treats including yoghurt drops are unhealthy for rodents due to their high sugar and salt content.

Check the ingredients of the Yogies snack -

Sugar, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil (palm kernel and palm), whey powder, dextrose, yogurt powder (cultured whey protein concentrate, cultured skim milk and yogurt culture), soya lecithin (an emulsifier), natural and/or artificial flavor, titanium dioxide, color added (red lake #40)

There is nothing in that that is nutritious to hamsters, all are harmful stuff in the long term.

And yes, the goo is the color used in the drops that she has smeared all across her face and fur. I guess since it is just a sugar snack, it could not be kept in her cheek pouches for long and melted. As she was trying to remove the melted stuff from her cheek pouch into her hands (as is their procedure to eat stored food) it spread all across her face and fur.

Just check her for the next week to make sure she is alright since there are rare cases of impacted pouches when such material does not come out completely and lodges in the pouch.

I do not tell people to avoid these treats permanently, give them one or two pieces a week but it is always better to stick to healthy treats like sunflower seeds, unsalted cheese, hard boiled egg etc which hamsters love and do not prove to be dangerous in the long run.

  7. I would keep an eye on her, and check that she is eating her normal hamster food, and drinking plenty.

Hamsters have a bad habits of stuffing their mouths full of goodies, and then running around excited trying to find the best place to store it.

In future, I would recommend that you feed her one yogie a day, and give it to her by hand so it strengthens up the bond, and you know that she has eaten it.

If you would like to buy a treat that you can safely keep her cage however, try buying those hanging stickle treats, they are like a long stick of seeds and nuts covered in honey, and they come with a little hook on the top which you can attach on the cage. These are great as they are quiet cheap, and keep hamsters busy!

    Hope this helps! x
