  1. idk if this is what you are looking for

  2. Plane did not negotiate the landing strip in bad weather resulting in largest number of deaths from an organized sports team via an aviation accident.  The incident occurred in Nov, 1970.  A movie "We Are Marshall" was brought to the movie houses approximately 3 years ago.   Sure the movie could spell out the details you are seeking.  Marshall is "suitcase school" and the movie would be my reference source vs. talking to students who were alive almost 40 years ago.

  3. the plane crashed...

  4. In November 1970, a chartered DC-9 crashed near the runway upon returning the Marshall football team from a game in North Carolina. All on board were killed, including 37 members of the team, the AD and his assistant, the coach and coaching staff and trainer. The community was devastated.

The team had been kicked out of the Mid America Conference the year before because of 150 NCAA violations. The university president was about to cancel the football program altogether.

The community and remaining new players begged for a reprieve and the team was allowed to continue. A new coach was hired. An NCAA waiver allowed freshmen to play so that enough players were eligible.

Everyone rallied round and the next season the team held together to win just two games. The story is about rebuilding, community, determination and fighting spirit.
