  1. George Brett was that madd because his home run was called back because apparently there was too much pine tar up the handle of the bat and the umpires thought it helped in hitting the homerun. So the umpires called him out for having too much pine tar on the bat and he went bezerk because he was called out.

The yankees ended up winning the game but the Royals appealed the game and they played again and the Royals ended up winning.

  2. I was a kid when this happened and here is what happened.

Brett homered to give the Royals a 5-4 lead.  NYY manager Billy Matrtin and catcher Rick Cerone called plate umpire Tim McClelleand's attention to the fact that the pine tar was applied too high up the bat as the maximum at that time was 18 inches from the k**b of the bat.  McClelland called in his three crewmates (Joe Brinkman, the late Nick Bremigan __ one of the best rules men in the game-- and Davey Phillips) to check the bat.

When measured against the 17 inch width of home plate it was dteremined that the excess pine tar made the bat illegal and by rule, Brett declared out which ended the game with the NYY winning.  The Royals protested and AL president Bobby Brown stated that the spirit of the rules was not infringed and ruled in favor of the Royals, forcing the game to be resumed from point of suspension with the Royals ahead.

The next year MLB changed the rule to discern between and altered bat (corked, flat sided, etc.-- penalty unchanged) and illegal (pinetar or rosin-- now just remove the bat from the game).

  3. itz on chanel 258 right now. brett was called out after a 2 run hr wit pine tar on his bat

  4. George Brett was caught with pine tar on the bat and was called out. So he got mad

  5. it was 5-4 and a man on base and brett hit a 2 run homer but the yankees manager told the ump to check the bat

the pine tar was too much up the bat so the umpire reversed the homerun call and made him bat again

    so brett was mad

    the royals(brett's team) lost

  6. Ay Caramba was close.  It was a 3-4 game (the Yankees leading) and George Brett hit a 2 run homer to give the Royals a 5-4 lead.  The Yankees had noticed previously that Brett put pine tar way up on his bat.  The pine tar was only supposed to go up the length of the bat equal to or less than the width of home plate.  The Yankees waited for an oppurtune moment (Brett's 2 run homer) to call the umpires attention to this.  Tim McLelland (the home plate umpire) ruled Brett out, Brett went balistic and so on.  The Royals protested the game and the commisioner eventually agreed with the Royals and made th etwo teams play the rest of the game from the point where Brett hit the home run.  Royals held on and won 5-4.
