It was an intricate part of the underground railroad, and was featured in Uncles Tom Cabin, as the place where Eliza, crossed the river, and was hidden and eventually sent on tho Canada. The Billingsly house was known as the signal station, as a lan tern was placed in the attic to send a message as the coast was clear.Today Ripley bills itself as Freedoms Landing.
