  3. Pliny the Elder was the general in command of the Roman fleet there. He organised the ships and went to help out and, as a result, lost his life. You should read the letters of Pliny the Younger for an account of this (he was the Elder's nephew and an eyewitness from Misenum). It's the only primary source for this kind of question really (although it was written about 20 years after the event when the young boy had grown up). You can access some of the letters on the web, but I'm not sure what number the ones regarding the eruption are. You should Google it though. The letter describes the smoke and smells of the eruption from the surrounding areas.
