What happened in the National Football Conference East and West divisions? – NFL Week 14 Roundup
There are only three weeks left before the regular season of the National Football League current season ends. Although the fate of few teams has already been decided, a look at the overall arrangement suggests that the competition
is still very much on and every team is going to deliver its maximum effort to finish as best as it could at the end of the season.
Like every week, the week 14 also had some thrilling encounters, some unexpected results and a few one-sided battles. Here is a look at the happenings in the National Football Conference East and West divisions in the week.
Washington Redskins defeated by New England Patriots 34-27
The American Football Conference East leaders, New England Patriots, visited Washington Redskins and quarterback Tom Brady ensured that his team got its 10th defeat of the season. Although he blundered in the final quarter,
the quarterback’s overall performance defended him. He completed 22 passes of 37 attempts for 357 yards while throwing three touchdowns and one interception.
Redskins, on the other hand, slumped yet again. Three weeks ago they defeated Seattle Seahawks to snap their six-game losing streak. That win has already been followed by two defeats, and who knows what’s next to come? Redskins
have won only four games this season and are placed at the bottom of the NFC East division.
Philadelphia Eagles dominate Miami Dolphins 26-10
A loss for Philadelphia Eagles might have ended the season for them. With this victory, they have managed to keep their playoff-hopes alive, howsoever faded they might be.
The victory was special as it marked the return of injured quarterback Michael Vick, who was out of last three games owing to two broken ribs. In the game, he completed 15 of 30 attempted passes for 208 yards while throwing a touchdown
and an interception. It was also a welcome victory for coach Andy Reid, who has been coming in the line of fire for Eagles’ poor show this season. With third place in the NFC East division, Eagles are still hoping to make it to the postseason through a wildcard.
Arizona Cardinals upset San Francisco 49ers 21-19
The ever-improving Arizona Cardinals proved that they are a force to be reckoned with, and it was certified when they beat the NFC West division champions, San Francisco 49ers.
Another playoff-contender, Cardinals, have made a powerful comeback in the season after losing six straight games at the beginning of the season. They had only won a game before the downfall started. Nevertheless, they were brave
enough to face the reality and committed enough not to give up. And their efforts paid off, really! In their last six games, they have won five, posing a potential threat to the other teams hoping to enter the playoffs.
Unfortunately for Cardinals, their premier quarterback Kevin Kolb, who had just recovered from an injury, was injured again in the game and was forced out in the first quarter. He was replaced by John Skelton, who made sure that
he did not repeat his past mistakes. He led his team strongly, calling right plays and throwing accurate balls. Although he gave away two interceptions, his three touchdown passes and 19 successful passes of 28 attempts for 282 yards made up for the mistakes.
New York Giants overcome Dallas Cowboys 37-34
This was undoubtedly the most thrilling encounter of the week. The value of the game was magnified because the supremacy of the NFC East was at stake.
Giants finally got back to the winning ways after defeating Cowboys in an evenly-poised battle as none of the teams were able to gain a lead of more than five points throughout the game.
It was another sad day for Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey, who, just like the last weekend’s game, missed out on an opportunity. With six seconds left on the clock, he failed to score a 47-yard field goal, which would have sent the
game to overtime.
However, the quarterbacks of both the teams lived up to the expectations, and left no stone unturned to make successful plays.
Cowboys’ Tony Romo completed 21 passes of 31 attempts for 321 yards and managed four touchdowns in the game, earning 141.3 quarterback-rating for the game.
Giants’ Eli Manning attempted 47 passes and finished 27 of them for 400 yards. He scored two touchdowns and threw an interception. He received 90.7 quarterback-rating for the game.
Giants and Cowboys now share the same record of seven victories and six defeats this season and are tied for the first place in the division ranking.
