The scene was 1979, a one day match between two countries, played on the land of a third country. The batting team required 3 runs to win, the last ball remaining to be bowled. The bowling team's captain, a brilliant one at that, then did something which, later on, changed the way one dayers would be played. This move forced a change in the rules of one day cricket and made it more exciting.

What happened, who was the captain and the two teams?

  1. In November 1979, Mike Brearley caused outrage when, with West Indies needing three to win off the last ball of a one-day international at Sydney, he put all his England fielders - including David Bairstow, the wicketkeeper - on the boundary. The crowd booed, Brearley was vilified by an Australian press which already considered him with a dislike only rivalled at the time by Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini, but the result stood.

Captains were Mike Brearley for England and Clive Lloyd for the west indies played in australia

  4. The skippers were Mike Brearley of England and Clive Lloyd of the West Indies. With three runs remaining Brearley put all his fielders, including the wickie on the boundary, allowing no chance of the West Indies to win or tie the match. This caused massive controversy and brought in the powerplay and fielding restrictions. The two countries were England and the West Indies, captain Mike Brearley and Clive Lloyd and the match was a triangular series match in Sydney in Australia.
