Question:

What happened?

I tried to arrange a meeting, over the phone, with my landlord and housemate, in preparation to move into a house, the landlord ended the call, even though the housemate was at home. I went around to see the house I was going to share, hoping I might meet the housemate, and talk to her. When I got there, no-one answered the door, as I knocked over, and over. Then as I left, down the street, I saw an unknown woman, much older than the people living there, staring at me, through the window, sitting on the bed that was supposed to belong to the young woman I was to talk to, that day. I waved to her, hoping she would open the door. She ignored me, and lay back down on the bed.

  1. I would probably find a new place to live, sounds like there is a touch of oddness going on around that house and moving is a hassle.  Whatever it is take an early warning sign and find a new rental.

  2. It sounds like a con to me. I'd predict the old lady lives there and doesn't know somebody is lining up housemates, and at some stage you will be asked for money and given a key if you demand one that doesn't even fit the door!

Nobody rents a place without seeing the inside of it with the agent, or without seeing it with the housemates if they are sub-letting themselves. Then the tricky bit is finding out whether they are allowed in the lease to sub-let, so you ask to see the lease.

  3. Maybe she's your housemate? I don't know. Call the landlord and arrange to come to the house when he/she is there.

    Additional comment:

Sounds like the landlord doesn't really know who lives in his house. Maybe the housemate is letting someone else stay there without his knowledge. If you're still interested in renting, see if the landlord can be there. Otherwise I agree that maybe you need to look for another place because something doesn't seem right.

  4. Very Strange ! ...but it seems one is not wanted

Just go to another house and don't worry yourself

too much with this one.  Sometimes things are not

meant to be.  I'm sure there is something else out

    there probably better for you.

  5. You didn't rent a place to live your life without looking inside it at least once.  I know that you didn't.  And when you paid your money, you didn't walk away without a key to your new home. Something has been left out of this story.

What happened is that you can't get into your home and you have an old flatmate.
