  1. Someone look up The Washington Post on Jan 21, 1977 and check out the article on the first page of the metro section. It talks about how we are going into another ice age b/c it was so cold. This was not just a few people saying this. They were teaching this in school when I was in 7th grade. That winter the Potomac river froze so thick that people were driving their cars across it. This was in 1977. By 1987, they came up with global warming. Things dont change that fast. If in fact the earth is warming, we didnt cause it and their is nothong we can do to change it and all this hoopla about how all these horrible things happening from it is a bunch of bs. Global Warming is just the latest excuse that the socialist governments of the world are using to take away more freedom and blame all the worlds problems on the US

  2. Actually it's true,  When I was a teen, every deep snow fall was linked to the idea that we were burning too much fossil fuel and we were headed for a mini ice age and that we were all going to die.

It was the envronmentalists that wanted catalytic converters on all cars, turning a car's exhaust into CO2 and water.  Now they flip flop like John Kerry is a pizza parlor and now this is a bad thing.  The carbon in the air was supposedly reflecting the sunlight away from the Earth.  But now it seems CO2 has changed properties.  Imagine that and it only took 30 some years.  Anyway, now even though CO2 is not a good insulator, we humans are responsible for putting tons of CO 2 into the air by breathing, going to work, and raising a family.  Not to mention all that CO2 "poisoning" the air from all the people working out and exercising in the gyms and outside.

You should help Al Gore fill his pockets with greed-- uh, green credits and "offset taxes' whatever that means.   That, or stay on the couch.

  3. This was a few guys, with no data, and no backing from any scientific organization.  They got much more attention in the media than they deserved.

They were EXACTLY like today's so-called "skeptics.

  4. ~~~~~

Since 1895, it has flip flopped 4 times. Maybe they finally got it right though the cool winter may have say something to say about it.

  5. the earth went through a cycle and started to warm up so they had to change their theories to fit the fit the new model. when it goes through another cycle they will change again to meet the new model.

  6. This has been rebutted some many times it is really starting to make those who keep asking it sound stupid.

  7. You are misinformed.  Most climate scientists were actually concerned about global warming before the 70's.  The global cooling issue was raised by a few and written about in a few sensationalistic articles.  Comparing the current concern and understanding of global warming by today's climate scientists with a handful of wild speculations about global cooling by a few individuals is clearly an apples and oranges comparison on steroids.

It amazes me how certain people on here that were clearly only kids (at best) in the 70's, think they remember what climate scientists were thinking back then (I suppose they started reading the journal Nature in kindergarten ;-). Of course, they never bother to post links to support  their claims of infallible memories, they simply expect us to believe their assertions.

  8. They also predicted we would require gas masks to breath, would have nuclear powered everything, drive flying cars, and robots would do EVERYTHING for us.

They are wrong most of the time.  They said it was supposed to be sunny on Sunday and it rained.

  9. I don't know why socialists tend to be in awe of scientists.  They are just people who come up with speculative theories.

Yes researchers from NASA and even some current AGW researchers were global cooling advocates in the 1970's.  That's how science works - it's about speculating based on limited information.

  10. Because just as today there are a few scientists with no data claiming that humans are cooking the planet, back then a handful of scientists were claiming that humans were freezing the planet.  Now that the earth is cooling down again they're no longer talking "global warming", it's "global climate change", that way the doomsayers can carry on no matter which direction temperatures take.  In the unlikely event that temperatures stay the same, they'll start fearmongering about "global climate stasis" and blame humans for that, too.

  11. You global warming critics need to climb out of the rock you're living under, and travel to Europe everyone there is protecting the environment, it's only the stubborn Americans who don't (some Americans do though, i do and I'm American)

  12. No, climate scientists were right.  Most predicted warming in the 1960s and 70s.  See Myth #1 at the link below for proof.

It's unfortunate that some people are trying to re-write history in order to further their own agenda, and it's important to actually research the subject yourself to determine which information is correct.  Just because you read somewhere on the internet that scientists were predicting global cooling in the 1970s doesn't make it true.

  13. Ah!  The most thoroughly debunked of all the stupid, improbable, impossible or mutually exclusive things the denieristi like to post over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over  and over and over and over  and over and over and over  and over and over and over  and over and over and over  and over and over and over  and over and over and over  and over and over and over  and over and over and over  and over and over and over  and over and over and over  and over and over and

over  and over and over and over  and over and over and

over  and over and over and over  and over and over and

over  and over and over and over  and over and over and

over  and over and over and over  and over and over and

over  and over and over and over  and over and over and

over  and over and over and over  and over and over and

over  and over and over and over  and over and over and

You know they don't get any truer by posting them more times?  I mean it's not like "Om Mani Padme Hum", or "Kong, Kong, Kong!"  Not really.

Oh, and I'm sorry Violation Notice Queen Lady, your flying car and your robot were mistakenly delivered to my address, and I sent them back (so it doesn't really disprove Global Warming).

    edit

That's exactly right, Captain Algae, and one of the noisiest denieramas is the guy who started the Global Cooling fuss back then.  He was against the Global Warming consensus even back in the day.

    Edit

Ben what in the world makes you say that someone concerned about Global Warming is a Socialist?  That's lame even for the denieristi.

Jim z you are full of it.  So full you appear to have been topped off real recently.  If it's false, we can count onb you to say it's true, and vice versa.  Do you even read other people's posts?

  14. no because when the ice caps melt, it will disturb things like the gulf stream so something like 70%of the earth will end up cooler

  15. Unlike some of these deniers of global cooling alarmism, (Dana is a good example), I remember the predictions well.  They were from the same shrill leftists as the current ones and they also blamed petroleum use.  There was no fear of warming because we had cooled.  They pretend to know that the cooling was caused by human emissions of sulfur but luckily we lowered our emissions and then warming took over.   Can these people find anything they don't blame on humans?  The fact that climates changed constantly in the past without any human cause seems to mean nothing to these people.  They still seem to feel the need to assign the latest climate trend to the industrialized world.

  16. Wow...that is a tired question.....

But just so you know, that was a just a few scientist claiming that theory of a cooling climate, not a consensus. Kinda like today, a few are making a lot of noise, trying to get everyone to forget what the majority of scientist say. And in case you don't follow, the majority say global climate change is happening.

  17. From an article in Time magazine.  Substitute cooling for warming and they can right the article today.

In Africa, drought continues for the sixth consecutive year, adding terribly to the toll of famine victims. During 1972 record rains in parts of the U.S., Pakistan and Japan caused some of the worst flooding in centuries. In Canada's wheat belt, a particularly chilly and rainy spring has delayed planting and may well bring a disappointingly small harvest. Rainy Britain, on the other hand, has suffered from uncharacteristic dry spells the past few springs. A series of unusually cold winters has gripped the American Far West, while New England and northern Europe have recently experienced the mildest winters within anyone's recollection.

As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past several years, a growing number of scientists are beginning to suspect that many seemingly contradictory meteorological fluctuations are actually part of a global climatic upheaval. However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing.

So we get several weather when it is cooling and severe weather when it is warming (studies show severe weather is less common when it is warming).  Could it be that severe weather is normal?

  18. Sigh... the correct term is "Global Climate Change".  Extend that further:

Catastrophic Global Climate Change brought about by Anthropogenic interference and activity.

"Global Warming" is just a dumbed down version to attempt to bring this issue to the masses... because even Al Gore thinks you can't be bothered to do more than change a light bulb.

I wish he weren't right about that, but seriously I wonder sometimes.
