Question:

What happened to Chile?

I just flew back to Chile after living in the States for 10 years and boy has it changed. It is like a totally different nation! Yes, the country is a lot richer, with more shopping malls, new foreign cars, rich districts, etc. but the crime has skyrocketed. Most of the rich live in gated communities guarded by armed patrolmen, while the middle class is virtually non-existent.

Now do not get me wrong, It is still a beautiful place to visit and if you have money, it is one of the best places to live in Latin America. The rich live lavishly unlike I have ever seen in the States, but it seems like the middle class and the poor have bit hit a bit harder.

I do not know what to think. Chile has risen in stature as great Latin American powerhouse, but the people have been greatly affected by the policies of past administrations. I like the fact that my country has modernized and gained world stature but I dislike the fact that the country has become a pretty elitist bastion.

  1. Sounds like the rich get richer... etc...

Thats what's called an oligarchy, it happens when the money and power is concentrated in the very few at the expense of everyone else.

The US may be heading that way eventually too.

I love capitalism and all, but that is it's main failing.

  2. I moved to the US from Chile 8 years ago and go back once a year to see my family.  Every time I feel like something has changed for the worse.  However, this is only true in the capital.  Outside of Santiago, residents are still very friendly and welcoming... just like in the song "Si vas para Chile..."  The scenery in the South is absolutely breathtaking.  Go and visit the glaciers before global warming melts them away.

Santiago has certainly become a stronghold for Latin American economics.  Business people's egos have increased proportionally to Chile's prestige.  There is an attitude of "I am better than you" that is truly palpable.

The malls just keep growing and it no longer feels like I am outside of the US.  There's too many McDonald's, Starbucks and even Tony Roma's.  I couldn't believe the first time I ran into a Hugo Boss store...

Chile is not what it used to be, but it is still where I come from, so I will keep going back once a year.
