What happened to Save our Trees?

We are constantly urged by environmentalists to save the planet, and in particular, trees, which are a vital resource. Yet here the BSI in the UK is, trying to push through a measure which will have numerous consequences. People will be forced to chop down trees in the front gardens, as being no longer affordable. We shall lose local landmarks and places to shelter from the hot sun or pelting rain. People who have listed trees will presumably have no choice but to be penalised (and this could include places like churches, which are already struggling to make ends meet).

What is even more alarming is the fact that, the removal of trees could have a devastating effect on the structure of buildings.

And all for what?

  1. to properly care for our environment we may have to give up a lot of things that make our lives comfortable. (even though many people live much less comfortably anyway) many people are too selfish to do that to save their own planet so we are well and truly screwed.

  2. Well people will just be poisoning the trees because they don't want the expense of the check.  It is expensive and even though I hate to see trees destroyed I can empathise with those who would not want the expense.

It upsets me that trees are just taken out with no consequence to large builders.

I have recently witnessed the destruction of many old lime trees and more to be destroyed, as well as oaks and Horse chestnuts.  Wheelers and dealers don't care as long as they get their cut of the cash.  I feel a bit disempowered where these trees are concerned.

  3. I have seen so many coniferous trees felled of late and not any deciduous trees planted in their place.  The spin to get "native" trees back into the UK is taking away the habitats of red kites and buzzards right now.  Plus will the old "native" trees be able to cope with the new climate by the time they have grown (if they ever get planted).  We need the coniferous trees and their O2 today!

  4. people relised they got bigger issues to deal with.

Maybi global warming will kill us before "save our tree would do anything".

Like we mite run out of trees in 200years. But global warming can be 100years.

  5. Free Travel, Free Energy, Free Housing and Free Organic Food for everyone

We can change Society into a truly Voluntary Society

And it makes Nuclear Technology unnessesary

Also we can Stop the harvesting and burning of Fossil Fuels

Africa, India and China will benefit most since their Infrastructure is less developed

It is Time to stop and turn around and look what we have done to our Planet

We should be ashamed what kind of a world we give to our children

We can use solar powered pumps and feed back water from the Sea into the Dessert

This will work retrogate to the Global warming

All things can be made out of Hemp, ecologically friendly and lasting

Henry Ford built a Car 1941! that was completeley made out of Hemp!

It even ran on Bio Diesel made from Hemp!

Hemp can produce 4X more raw material in a year then Trees in 20 Years!

And that from the same amount of space!

  6. From the link you included, I find it hard to believe the proposal will get approved and signed into law.

As other posters already mentioned, proper selection of the trees to match the local climate and environments are very important. In the US, though many homeowners and builders plant trees on the lots to improve the property values and appeals, oftent time they have poor knowledge of tree selections. many big trees (in mature) are planted on small lots. As the tree become fully grown, they are so big and too close to the house and cause a potential hazard and have to be cut down.

  7. I'm only just starting to learn more about this issue, but it sounds like efforts on promoting indigenous trees throughout regions of England (at the expense of established and healthy trees not native to the area) has not been thought through clearly.

Here in the US during the late 70s and early 80s Save Our Trees was basically an umbrella name for a number of non-profits and community groups engaged in tree planting initiatives and preservation programs.  From my understanding there was no specific 501(c) 3 that was titled "Save Our Trees".

Today we have strong national organizations like the Arbor Day Foundation and Rails to Trails that do some very impressive projects at restoration, preservation and planting initiatives.  There are a growing number of regional and local programs (such as Chicago's Gateway Green) that are getting strong support and recognition.

While good to see, we still have a long way to go to offset the damage that mankind has done to our forests.

  8. I'm cutting down trees right and left to offset this winter's heating oil prices.  The way I see it, I could use a little global warming.

  9. well, im a "tree huger" and there are people saving lives, that might be a little more improtant.

  10. I'm not familiar with this proposed law but if the UK is anything like the us when it comes to environmental law then i can understand how this proposed law could be backward and or corrupt.

You have my moral support in fighting this injustice. Maybe you should petition the government, write articles, and maybe even do some protesting.

    Best of wishes  : )
