  1. I'm an administrator on a site which covers ADHD and the only way a child who doesn't have it is diagnosed with it is because they have a very bad doctor. ADHD is a very real and disabling disorder caused by a physical condition. Scientists are now finding that it can be seen on certain types of tests but its still in the early stages and won't be a proper evaluation tool for some time yet.

The best way to know whether your child has ADHD or is just a very active, energetic child is to take them to a child psychiatrist who is experienced in diagnosing various disorders. There are many which can easily be misdiagnosed by someone who doesn't have the training to tell the difference.

Just to help you understand, ADHD isn't always hyperactive. The attention deficit is caused by neurons misfiring in the brain and causing a person to be easily distracted. Hyperactivity is one symptom of one form of ADHD but there is also ADHD inattentive in which a person is usually not as active as normal children. There is ADHD impulsive in which there is a lack of self control and they often do or blurt out things which are inappropriate because the message that its wrong doesn't reach their brain in time to stop them. There is also ADHD combination with can be a combination of 2 or more of the other types.

  2. i think its just easier for irresponsible parents to go to a dr. & have their child evaluated & diagnosed w/some disorder than to actually work & spend time educating a child. Im not saying all cases are not true, but i do believe many are. I have seen many parents blame thier own bad parenting on others or schools or disorders, its always someone else's fault before its their own. Kids r kids & should be treated like them with patience, discipline & love. Parents need to spend time w/them & understand why they r rebelling or acting the way they are. Kids dont need to responsibilities or need to knw about adult things so early on, they need to learn basic skills & how to have innocent fun.

  3. that is true, you have a very good point.

i believe it is so hard to tell nowadays if a child (early years) is ADHD or not. it is very hard to tell, because you don't know if they're just being kids or they really are ADHD.

its so easy to get distracted in school considering the fact that we have video games, computer games, tv, etc. etc.

the first thing parents and teachers notice is that they're distracted and who wouldn't be?!

i also believe if they have been diagnosed by not just ONE doctor but multiple, treatment should be started with therapy and not just medicating them right away, because if they made a mistake and you were just going through a "kid phase" it could change everything.

labeling can be a scary thing :[

  4. You're right! Parents are over-medicating their children and it is so surprising to see how young it is beginning! There were children in my son's preschool class who were already diagnosed with ADHD! I think that with all of the growing technology, computers, nintendo, ipods and such that kids are becoming more sedentary and playing outside less. So when a child starts running around and being active and childish, people assume that he/she has a problem.

I am not implying that ADHD is not a real condition. It is. However, we need to be careful about diagnosing children and medicating them at such  young ages.

  5. Thats because parents are lazy now and I think a lot of them are having the thought" children should be seen and not heard".  My daughter is 8 and although there are times when I have to tell her to settle down( I also have a  newborn) I let her play, and sing, and I am not against her running in the house or just being her. I guess I just have more patience then other parents though...

  6. I think it's easier to give a child a label like ADHD then to really parent these kids.  Don't get me wrong, there are definate real cases, but it seems over diagnosed.
