it was lanes 2-9 in like 100m just wondering why, as in the long distance running, like 5000m, they could run in lane 1. confusing

  1. You're stupid! Go and participate some athletic and you'll know why..

  2. Well, since there are nine lanes on the track and only eight competitors in the finals of the events less than 1500m in distance, they could have chosen to run lanes 1-8 or lanes 2-9. Since stepping on the inside lane is more common and will result in a disqualification, I imagine that they chose to run lanes 2-9 so that if one were to step on the inside lane they would not be stepping on a curb like they would be in lane 1.

Events 800m in length and longer can run in lane 1 because they only stay in their lane for a short period of time before breaking into a pack in lane 1 (it is the shortest way around the track).

    Hope this helps!
