Question:

What happened to my Syrian hammie?

Hi there. I have had many many hamsters over the years and I have never experienced this before! I was holding my newest hamster and it felt like she was vibrating or purring. I'm not sure what that means. She is a young Syrian and I don't think she is more than two months old. She is pretty small right now.

Do you think I scared her? She was calm in my hands but I kept feeling this vibration. I am just worried she is still afraid of me.

Any thoughts? Thanks so much!

  1. your hammie is fine =]

when i hold my hammies sometimes they shave i think its when they sniff cause there noses sniff really fast

  2. I am sure she is fine but there are quite a few reasons why she could be shaking she could

1:Your hamster may have diabetes, as do about 40% of them. You may notice that it's fatter than the others (if you have others). You should not breed news ones with that hamster. Also cut out sweet treats, like those seeds on a stick, which are usually glued together with honey. Reduce the sugar in the diet. You may also notice the hamster drinks a lot and therefore urinates a lot.

All symptoms disappeared after I changed the diet of the one I had.

2: She could have excess energy which means she just needs a ball or something to run it off

3: She could be cold if that's the case she just needs some extra bedding or something to keep her warm

or 4: She is just a little scared and you just need to bond with her a little more and when she gets properly used to you it should stop feeding her treats should help not to many though you dont want a fat hamster lol :D

if you suspect it is diabetes take her to the vets to comfirm it then they can give you more information on it.

I am sure she is perfectly healthy and fine but I hope this helps and good luck with your hamster x

  3. Hamsters do that when they're scared. It makes sense that she's be scared when you just got her.

Even after this long (I've had this hamster for almost a year) she still vibartes occasionally when I pick her up.

Don't worry bout it, and its not the food ;)

  4. sounds like she's just shaking. How long ago did you buy her? Sometimes, depending on the animal, it takes a long time for them to get used to something new
