I just always wondered why the L1011 just vanished from air service. I once saw an ad in aircraft trading for an L1011 for just 2 million and that was air worthy. I have not seen an L 1011 in any service at all Why??

  1. Lockheed withdrew from commercial aircraft business due to its below-target sales.

  2. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lockheed_10...

  3. That's like asking why the Chevette has vanished from the roads. They don't build them any more, and after a certain length of service they can't be used for passenger service any more. Lockheed has completely left the airline business as well, so there have been no new versions to keep the type in service.

  4. it kinda depends on where u live cuz i live in the us and they dont fly here anymore but if u like in like the uk or another place across the seas then u will most likely see them because the american airlines sold them off to other non american airlines

  5. can you say "dinosaur"?

  6. Lockheed needed to sell 500 planes to break even, but in 1981 announced production would end with delivery of the 250th and last plane on order in 1984. The L1011's failure to achieve profitability caused Lockheed to withdraw from the civil aircraft business

  7. Its a older Plane....Just like were starting not to see anymore 727's Dc10's etc. Sad but very true.

  8. Do a search for it (or "Tristar" as it's also known) on Airliners.net... There are plenty still around, not to mention that they are still one of the main work horses of the Royal Air Force transport fleet!

Interestingly, Not sure if this is the same for all of them, buit the RAF version has the seats backwards (facing the back) as it's supposed to be safer in a crash...

I see them flying over here in the UK everytime I pass thier base...
