What happened to the Number 4, for Stewart-Haas Racing?

I thought that when Newman signed with Stewart-Haas he would be driving the number 4 car. Now he is assigned to the number 39 car. What happened with the deal of the number 4?

Morgan McClure apparently still believes he'll be able to return to Cup racing soon, so he has the rights to the #4 next season, so Tony had to change Ryan's # from 4 to 39, which is sentimental to him because it was the number he used in his 1st USAC victory.

to put it in a quick simple way Tony took da 4 and MMM got pissed so the new nicer owner tony gave it back and ryan 39 wich he has used in the NWS before.

Tony says:We had some hiccups in the No. 4 with Larry McClure,” Stewart said. “I’m not sure there was enough due diligence when it came to knowing for sure if Mr. McClure was going to have a car for next year. We spoke with NASCAR and NASCAR said that that number was available and I’m not sure that, all the way around, that enough due diligence was done.We’ve been told that he’s going to run some races next year and, to us, especially me as a car owner, we know how much car numbers mean to teams and organizations. Nothing solid has came out yet. Speculation is Tony Stewart didn't want to ruffle any more feathers in NASCAR, and the previous team to use that number Morgan McClure Motorsports was p'd off they got that number basically taken away from them.. so in turn, Tony didn't push the issue and gave Ryan a surprise in letting him use the # he won his first USAC midget race in, the #39.

Morgan McClure Motorsports says that they own the #4 which they don't NASCAR OWNS IT.

because he was nice enough to give newman a number that means something to him. 39 was newman's USAC number.

Stewart said on is radio show that if Morgan-McClure Motorsports decided it could return to the Sprint Cup Series next season, he wanted the Virginia-based team to be able to continue to use its No. 4. He picked his car number because it was special to him and he knew the No. 39 was special to Newman. Newman's first-ever USAC midget win came in the No. 39 car.
