What happened to the mayans?

It is hard to believe that a race of people could all of a sudden fanish from existence

nothing. they are are still living in the highlands of chiapas mexico, guatmemala, and parts of honduras.

go to Yucatan, Belize, Guatamala...  their civilization collapsed, due to one reason or other, but the people didn't go anywhere.

The mayan people still exist, it's just the mayan civilization ended.  There are two ideas for why this occurred:

1. Too many people, not enough food - meaning a boom/bust cycle...they finally reached the lands carrying capacity for their territory but still had people to feed, famine and starvation would then lead to the collapse of the larger cities

2. Like many natives European diseases wiped many of them out...you can't run a huge city with say only 30 people...
