  1. The number 1 position is totally wide open for a while now since the retirement of Justine Henin if she did not request her ranking points to be taken out then we wouldn't be having this problem or at least till US open.

Most experts have proclaimed jelena jankovic as the weakest number 1 ever. Also, because she has the lowest points for  a player who got the number 1 position for the first time. She even said she did not deserve it at the moment.

What's worse is that she has not won a grand slam let alone getting a slam final. She only has a tier one to abck up her number 1. Sad and pathetic.

Sharapova is injured, Williams sisters plays a limited number of tournament, and Ivanovic is feeling the pressure of high expectations so what we are left with is a player who consistenly gets to quarters and semis. So it is safe to say that the NUMBER 1 position is for being the most consistent not necessarily the BEST.

The ranking system should be changed but the top palyers must also step up. Hopefully someone can dominate from olympics to yec... so we have a true number 1.

  2. Well, she is the Marcelo Rios of women's tennis. Rios reached No.1 on the men's side without a grand slam title either. The ranking system has not changed a lot. If you play a brutal schedule, reach many semis and a few finals, you will rake up points to get to the top. The reason this happened is there is a lot of parity in the women's game today with no dominant players like Henin, Graf, Seles, or even the William sisters when they were younger. Davydenko is a corollary on the men's side today but he couldn't get higher than #4 because the big 3 have been a class above the rest and winning everything.

The only downside to this approach is you get burned out quickly. I think JJ is going through that right now. She better trim down the number of tournaments she plays next year or she may have to retire early like Clijsters (who IMO was another 'unimpressive' No.1 player with just one GS title but lots of victories in smaller tournaments).

  3. yes i agree with you.. and this whole chain of events started with justine henin giving up tennis.. what a disaster she started!

jankovic certainly does not deserve the 1 rank.. not even making it to a grand slam final.... even with henin out.... so what is her excuse this year?

yes jankovic relies on too many tournaments.. and even that has not gone well for her..

  4. I completely agree with you.

  5. it happened in both ATP and WTA before.

when there is no dominant player(s), the most consistant play will get to #1.

jankovic is a good player and with great personality.  i don't mind having her as the #1 player in my sports.

  6. yea i know. i dont get it either. she hasnt even been in a final, yet alone won any grand slams.

  7. I don't think its rediculous. Think about your workplace. Imagine if you had a bunch of employees who did the best work but didn't show up everyday.  Should they receive the accolades? Frankly I'm tired of seeing the top players pull out of tournaments left and right. I say good for Helena Jankovic. Besides, she's no Marcelo Rios. Once she gets over her issue with dropping important matches, she'll get to #1 without the second guessing anyway.
