  1. I live on the site of an old landfill just outside of Sydney, Australia.  They've turned it into a beautiful park (home of the 2000 Olympics) with 45 km of paved bicycle trails, a bird sanctuary, sporting venues, concert venues, residential areas, a water park, hotels, restaraunts, and pretty grass covered man-made hills that have spiral walking paths that allow you to walk to the top.  The hills are where the excess waste is stored.  There is a large bay of water that is allegedly contaminated, but it is full of large fish, rock oysters, and water birds, so it really can't be terribly polluted.

  2. You can do a lot of things with a closed landfill. You can turn it into a park, a golf course, a shopping center and more.

If the landfill is/was built and cared for properly, there are few risks. If done improperly there is danger of explosive gases, settling, along with issues like how to bring in utilities.

Here are a few interesting articles about what has been, and can be done.
