What happens after you are caught shoplifting?

I accidently dropped 2 pairs of earrings into my purse when i put my keys and phone in there while shopping cuz i was holding it in my hand, and on the way out got stopped. being nervous, i lied and said i purchased the items, so they took me back and said they were going to persecute me for shoplifting. the police were not called, just a security person that escorted me out. they gave me a peice of paper saying i'll get a letter in the next few days about a fine, and i signed a paper saying i will not enter the store for 3 years. since the police were not called in, does that mean it will not go on my record? or do they contact the police later? basically i have no idea what's happening now, and i feel like i have been wrongly persecuted.

  1. Accidentally... LOL.

If they didn't call the cops you should be OK.  Consider it a lesson to never steal again.

  2. I would tell the truth and try to make it believable as possible, maybe ask if they have cameras in the store to show you bumped them into your purse but without proof all they can think is that you did shoplift because they found the earrings in your purse. Go to this site for more info on shoplifting.

  3. If you pay the fine they won't notify the police and you won't have a record. If you don't pay the fine they will turn it over to the police since you signed the paper.
