What happens at court for tickets?

When you go to court and you plead guilty with an explanation for a traffic ticket, can someone explain to me everything that happens. Do they pull up your previous record? Does the cop come and tell the judge the story himself?

and of course.... what can you achieve by doing this? getting rid of the ticket ? or even most of the points or lowering the fine ? or ... what goes on ? can someone please help me.

Thank you.

  1. Ontario, Canada or Ontario, California?

If California, "guilty with an explanation" usually only gives you more time in front of the judge.  (The officer is not present in court on your appearance date.)  In most cases, the explanation means nothing.  It's primarily done to give the ticketed party a chance to vent and feel better.  Once in a while, if it's a good explanation, your fine could be lowered or suspended all together; traffic school might be offered if it wasn't otherwise available or if you're one-in-a-million, it might get dismissed.

  2. the cop wont be there unless you plead innocent. An explanation usually gets you nothing if pleading guilty. They will give you a fine and offer traffic school to keep the points off your record.
