  1. day and night r the same length

  2. for summer solstice, since the Earth's North pole is pointly most directly at the sun than at any other time, it results in the longest day of the year for any point North of the equator, and the shortest day of the year for all points south of the equator.

for winter solstice, the Earth's south pole is pointing most directly at the sun than any other time, so the Northern resgions have the shortest day of the year, and the southern hemisphere has the longest day.

For the spring and fall solstice (more commonly called the equinox) the earth's axis is at a tangent to its orbit, so the day at any point on the globe will be exactly 12 hours, and the night will be an equal length.

  3. Solstices occur twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is most oriented toward or away from the Sun, causing the Sun to reach its northernmost and southernmost extremes. The name is derived from the Latin sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still), because at the solstices, the Sun stands still in declination; that is, its apparent movement north or south comes to a standstill.
