  1. well, just as long as your arm movement has more power than gravity and water resistance, you will move. however, if your arm movement is lousy, down u go! SPLOOSH! Glub glub glub.......

  2. If you are of more less normal build you legs will tend to sink, making a lot of drag and slowing you down.   You end up trying to swim while upright, and not horizontal. But they will not pull you under water.  You float mostly because your chest area has a lot of air in it (lungs) and so low denstity.  Your head floats best because of all the air cavities in it (sinuses, ear canals, mouth if closed).  By moving your feet just a little bit they will come towards the surface and be in line with your head and chest.  You will immediately feel the drop in resistence, movement will improve.

  3. When I did swimming training our coach used to get us to do a few laps up and down but use our legs as minimally as possible. So we would do the freestyle stroke(crawl) and breastsrtoke but only use our arms. This apparently helps develop and stregthen your stomach muscles because your mainly using your upper body to power through the water. It is quite hard at first but it's good exercise and really helps you target aspects of your arm technique and stroke that you need to work on and if you're going to be swimming stroke such as butterfly you do need strong stomach muscles to lift yourself up. I hope this is what you mean.
