My spouse is in the military and could move at any time. I am a full time student in an accelerated program. If I defer my jury duty, I will defer it until after I graduate. However, if my husband has been relocated and I want to move with him, will I be able to get out of jury duty again since I have moved, or am I obligated to serve jury duty?

  1. If you have moved out of the jurisdiction, you do not have to go report for jury duty. (Though do send back the summons telling them that.)

As for being a student...you can request a deferment, but you can't keep doing it the whole time you're in school.  You can't specify a timeframe for your deferment...it's a one time deal until your name gets drawn again.

I can't imagine that you would receive so many summons as for this to be a problem.  Most courts will grant you a deferment for your situation.  But school only goes so long...and I've never received a summons more than once every three or four years.

  2. If you move and then get notified for jury duty you would just tell them you moved to a new address, like outside their county so you wouldn't be eligible to serve jury duty there anyway, unless your planning to maintain that location as your permanent residence. Even then you would probably get a waiver. If you move just go get a new driver license, so you will be showing your claim of the new location.
