What happens if I don't turn in my suspended registration plates?

My registration plates were suspended for having a lapse in insurance and forgetting to send in proof. Now they want me to turn in my plates. Does anyone know what will happen if I don't turn in the plates? They want a 50 dollar restoration fee, if I just pay that and don't turn in the plates, what can they do? Can they just suspend my registration without the plates?

  1. In NYS, they charge you something like $10 per day as fine.  So in a month it comes out to $300. In a year that comes out to $3,650.

It is much cheaper to follow their instructions.

    Good Luck...
