What happens if I plead guilty in a traffic court?

Earlier ago I posted a question saying how I should fight a ticket that was issued for not moving over when a cop was issuing a ticket. I decided I probably wouldn't win since I was in the wrong.

What would happen if I go to court and plead guilty and ask for a lesser charge? I have no previous driving offense and what would happen if I pleaded guilty and asked for a leser charge?

Should I just pay the fine and avoid the court or plead guilty and ask for a lesser charge? I don't speed, run red lights and I don't plan on repeating the offense again.

What would happen if I plead guilty?

  1. you plead guilty and pay the fine. if you fight it and loose, you still pay the fine. you may try to explain your case to the judge and ask if the summons could be reduced.

  2. Never plead guilty at the arraignment.  That's just a good way to get screwed with the max. penalty.  You have no record so chances are they'll cut you a break but you'll have to talk to the prosecutor (either you or your attorney).  They;ll also probably give conditions that will wipe it off your record if you stay clean for a year or two.  Take it from me, get it cleared if you can.  All that stuff adds up.  I repeat, don't plead guilty at arraignment.

  3. Normally, you get a fine lesser than ticket. But, it is up to the judge's mood.  Keep in mind the worst that can happen is the original fine plus court costs.
