I recently have recieved a check from an advertising company for 4K.

Is the check real? What if it is not? And if it is fraud, why would an advertising company do such a thing?

I signed no papers whatsoever...

  1. It is definately a scam.  Look on the check to see if it has terms and conditions.  If so, by depositing it, you are agreeing to the terms.  If you deposit it and it is a fraudulent check, the check will not go through.  The funds may clear, but they will be reversed after about 7-10 business days.  I would just tear it up b/c nobody gives away $4k.

  2. Depositing a fraudulent check is a felony. You can be fined large sums and could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.

  3. First off, the gimmick for these things is if you cash the check, then you are agreeing to purchase some service or whatever.  If the check isn't of this sort, and it is a bad check, it is illegal for you to cash it.  If you do so, you are going to be liable for any money gotten off that check.

Best to shred it and forget it.
